2. Using the app

2.1 Your location

If you allow it, Hungry Map uses your device’s location to centre the map and show places near you. Hungry Map uses your location on your device and never sends it to us. You can change the permission at any time in the iOS Settings; the app keeps working when you move the map by hand.

To draw the map and find places, the app uses Apple’s map service (MapKit). Like Apple Maps itself, it requests map data and places for the area you are looking at directly from Apple. Apple’s privacy policy applies to this.

2.2 Opening hours

Opening hours come from OpenStreetMap in the form of region packs. These packs are downloaded from GitHub (GitHub, Inc., USA), where they are hosted; as with any download, GitHub receives your IP address to deliver the file. No other data is sent.

When the map shows a place without opening hours, the app sends that place’s details to our server so we can look up the hours: its anonymous ID (an OpenStreetMap or Apple place ID), its name, coordinates, website and country, and the pack region. These are public facts about a restaurant, not about you. We do not store your IP address or any identifier of you or your device with them. Our server then researches the hours, for example from the restaurant’s own website, with the help of an AI model via OpenRouter (see 2.3) and via the location service HERE (HERE Global B.V.). No user data is sent to these services — only the restaurant’s details. The hours we find are shared with all users of the app.

2.3 Menu reading (Premium)

When you tap “Load menu”, the app reads the menu from the restaurant’s website and sends the website address and the menu text (or the dishes already recognised in it) together with the place’s ID and name to our server. There, AI models sort the dishes and estimate calories. The text is forwarded for this purpose to OpenRouter (OpenRouter, Inc., USA), which passes it on to AI model providers that may be located outside the EU. Menus read from restaurant websites are stored per restaurant for up to 30 days and may be shown to other users who open the same restaurant.

If you photograph a menu, text recognition runs on your device. The photo itself never leaves your device — only the recognised menu text is sent for sorting, as described above. Menus from your photos are not stored in our database and are not shown to other users.

Menu texts contain no personal data about you. We route these requests only to AI providers that neither store nor train on the data (OpenRouter’s “no data collection” setting); OpenRouter itself does not use it for training. Transfers to providers outside the EU are based on the EU standard contractual clauses.

2.4 Ratings from Google

The place details show public ratings through a component provided by Google (Google Places UI Kit). When you open a place’s details, this component loads the information directly from Google; Google receives technical data such as your IP address and the requested place. Google’s privacy policy applies to this component. We do not receive any data from it.

2.5 Favourites, ratings and menus you keep

Your favourites, lists, own ratings, notes, dish ratings and saved menus are stored on your device. If iCloud is enabled for Hungry Map, they are synced through your private iCloud (Apple CloudKit), so they are available on your other devices. This data sits in your personal iCloud account — we cannot access or read it. You can turn off iCloud sync for the app in the iOS Settings and delete the data by deleting the app and its iCloud data (Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage).

2.6 Purchases

Premium is bought through Apple’s App Store (StoreKit). Apple processes the payment; we receive no payment details and no information that identifies you — only anonymous, aggregated sales reports from Apple. Apple’s privacy policy applies.

2.7 No ads, no tracking, no analytics of our own

Hungry Map contains no advertising, no tracking and none of our own analytics or crash reporting, and it does not create a user account. The one exception is Google’s Places component that shows ratings in the place details: as declared in its privacy manifest, Google may collect device data such as location, a device identifier and usage/diagnostic data for its own service and analytics, under Google’s privacy policy. We never receive that data. If you have allowed it in your iOS settings, Apple may share anonymous crash reports and usage statistics with developers; this is controlled by Apple and you.

2.8 Technical side of our server

Our server runs on Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.), which necessarily sees your IP address to deliver requests and protect the service against abuse. We do not store IP addresses in our database. The app also fetches small configuration files from our server; these requests contain no personal data.

3. This website

This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics, trackers or external services; the fonts are hosted on our own server. If you close the language hint, your choice is remembered in your browser’s local storage and never sent to us. The web server processes the technical data needed to deliver pages (IP address, time, requested page, browser type) to operate and secure the site; it is not used to identify you. These logs are size-limited and overwritten automatically, usually within a few days. The website is hosted on a server of Hetzner Online GmbH (Gunzenhausen, Germany), our processor.

4. Legal bases

We process data to provide the features you use (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR — e.g. reading a menu when you ask for it) and on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing accurate opening hours and in running our services securely (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Location access on your device is based on your permission, which you can withdraw at any time.

5. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and to object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. Because we do not know who you are, we usually hold no data that can be linked to you — but just ask at [enable JavaScript for the address] and we will help. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; in Austria this is the Datenschutzbehörde (dsb.gv.at).

6. Changes

If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this policy and change the date below.
